Marina Vallarta Las Palmas I Local 3

Ghost Town, Deserted Fishing Grounds, Incredible Catch!

Well, we´re finally here, the time of year when if you can´t catch a fish, then you don´t have a line in the water. Nothing fancy, just get there, you´ll catch fish, end of story. Now the rest of this weeks report is now redundant. Sailfish, Marlin, Tuna, Dorado, Pargo or Dog Tooth Snappers, I mean what else could you possibly want? And if that´s not enough, the fishing grounds are a deserted ghost town where you can have a finned fantasy for the taking. It´s the time when even bad captains catch fish. Jip Trips for $180 dollars roaming from Los Arcos to Marina Vallarta are catching fish. Sailfish off La Cruz, Yellowfin Tuna or Footballs abundant at Yelapa. I mean there´s the report. But of course there´s always more to say….

It doesn´t really matter where you are go, you´ll be boating fish we mostly talk about for nine months and fantasize about for the summer! Seriously, no fluff, the fishing is what our jaded clients and locals have come to expect. So you won´t find much fanfare, this is what is supposed to happen anyway. Me, I am so tired of bad seasons, I can hardly keep my excitement contained… Ha ha.

80 lb Cubera Snappers, 400 lb Black Marlin, Bait City!

The Marietta Islands have been hot and cold, hence the pedal to the metal title. Some days last week, too much bait, couldn´t get a strike for nothing! But boy has that changed. Dorado in the 35 lb range are all around the island. Red Snappers to 30 lbs and abundant, Bonito, Sierra Mackerals, Sailfish and even some Rooster fish (not many). Roosters could be coming in now, so stay tuned, this would be great for the fly fishing or light tackle guys! Anything is possible right now, so get out there. With Spinner Dolphin in the area the Football Yellowin Tuna (Footballs) are in the 40 to50 lb size range, so keep an eye pealed! Eight hour trips are well worth the time and the fuel dollar, so get out there, this is fishing season, and it´s a great season!

Finally, The Seasonal Rains Begin, Bay Fishing Improves

Finally, The Seasonal Rains Begin, Bay Fishing Improves Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle After weeks of horribly intense humidity the seasonal rains have finally begun bringing relief for a short time anyway. Now this is a funny situation how it will affect fishing in our area. The rains in […]

Sharp Drop in Water Temps, Striped Marlin Return, Jacks also

The air is warm, the humidity is way up and all of a sudden these cold currents show up out of nowhere! That´s right amigos, just when you think it´s going to be a great day fishing, the water gauge shows water temperatures that are hitting a chilly 75 Degrees. As a result Black and Blue Marlin have moved out of the area for the moment, that´s the down side. The up side; Striped Marlin are back in the area and they´re good sized running 300 lbs, but you won´t see Striped Marlin occupy the same areas as Black Marlin with their preferences in water temperatures being at different levels. Having said that the fishing is great, but you may have a mixture of winter and summer species fighting for your bait!

Black Marlin and Wide Open Fishing Grounds

We have been experiencing uncomfortable humidity for the last week or so and we finally had our first rain of the summer season. Nothing serious or heavy, but the first time normally is just that, light and mildly refreshing. Fishing now has been anything but mild with Black Marlin spreading out to El Banco and they´re still at Corbeteña as well. This will become almost a dull and boring story as we come into Fishings High Season. Now this is not tourism high season, no we´re talking fishing high season. Yellowfin Tuna are also starting to move in a little more each day. Dorado, Sailfish and even Rooster fish are here for the taking. With the seasons being ¨off¨ the fishing grounds are deserted and stuffed with bucket list fish. The only thing missing now is you!

Black Marlin and Blue Marlin Return to Corbeteña

The seasons are changing to our normal warm and humid conditions. With these warm weather conditions comes warm weather. To be specific it means we have our annual surge of warm water species (fish that is) moving into the area. This season is no different as we see an increase in Blue and Black marlin. Striped Marlin dwindling in numbers as they migrate north to Cabo as would be expected. Some local-ish Yellowfin Tuna action is welcome and right on time. To me it´s always funny how as tourism slows to a crawl here in Puerto Vallarta as our world famous fishing grounds explode with bucket list fish for the vacation adventurer. Streaky bites, changing currents, and plenty of bait in the water makes for an interesting combination of factors that combined make your fishing day unique. Dorado at the buoys, the commercial guys hate me telling you this, have been hot and then cold. Some days you´ll find your fill of fish, other days they don´t want your bait and still other days…., well you could spend a lifetime trying to understand seasonal fluctuation both normal and unexpected.

Rollercoaster Bites, Seasonal Species in Flux, Big Dorado

Everyear we come to expect certain things. But after a few years of really up-side-down fishing, I have learned, with many others, it would be easier to predict what my ex-wife was going to do next. Normally what is happening now, happens in April. Some days the fishing is incredible, other days will have you pulling your hair out. Having said that Striped Marlin are all over the deep water locations with Bull Dorado.

Surprising Great Fishing For Early Spring, Dorado in the Bay!

With water temperatures at unseasonable highs, it´s more like summer fishing than winter fishing. Winter and summer species are streaked throughout our world famous fishing grounds and anything is possible. Dorado are still hanging out and have moved into the bay, which is a good thing. Monster Yellowfin Tuna at the Tres Maria Islands. Spinner Dolphin at El Banco and Corbeteña mean ever welcome Football Tuna to 70 lbs. And with Striped Marlin in the area, there seems little to complain about when it comes to fishing in Puerto Vallarta. For fair weather fisherman, you finally can have your cake and eat it too! It may be Global Warming, it may be El Nino once again, but whatever it is, we´ll just thank the stars that it seems to be continuing.
