After weeks and weeks of Yellowfin Tuna ignoring any bait put in front of them things are finally changing. My good friend Joel called the shop today to let me know I was full of “BS” and that there were Tuna hitting baits like Poppers and Goggle eyes at Corbetena. Well I had to laugh because I publish articles on the web and on my webpage. I always update the web page, but I can’t update articles in the PV Mirror for instance. But Joel is right, about three days after my last article things changed. Now I’m not talking about anything drastic, but small changes are better than no changes. One nice change is Yellowfin Tuna are still at Corbetena and the YF Tuna are taking baits again finally. That can only mean that the three inch Squids which are still there are finally thinning in numbers. Finally a trip to Corbetena is worth the effort and the fuel expense, YeHa!
Well folks, the cold snap continues and frankly we’re in the middle of a transition period. The warm water species have left, except for Yellowfin tuna. The water at Corbetena is dirty as is most of the fishing grounds around the area. Whale food aka plankton is so massive in the area, it’s turned into a fish smorgasbord! Yes folks for the moment, remembering that things can change in a heartbeat, fishing outside of the bay is “challenging” at best.
Every year, for a brief few weeks, we see perfect fishing conditions in a comfortable climate! But this is how a transition period begins. It happens every year and we hope it’s late so we can get through the holiday season with world class fishing. And like every year we start to see the changing currents and thus water temperatures drop. Every November we have the Whales visit our bay and hang around until March. This is the first indication the seasons will soon be changing.
One of the fun and interesting things about Puerto Vallarta is the fact we get Whales every year about this time. Like clockwork tiny baits like Krill Squids, tiny Krill Shrimp and a complete fish smorgasbord return yearly to our Bay of Banderas. Of course this is the biggest reason Whales come to visit us yearly with the easy living and “fast food”. Whales love it and so do smaller fish like Marlin, Sailfish and Yellowfin Tuna to name a few. If you can imagine tiny floating tacos, hamburgers and French fries and all you had to do was open your mouth. That’s what it’s like to fish in the bay and surrounding area right now! Now imagine you’re trying to grab the attention of those same fish with your baits. World class fishing is always challenging, the fish are there, feeling lucky?
Well it’s not quite a cookie cutter report, but when the fishing is world class you and great you sound like you’re repeating yourself. No matter how you look at it, the fishing in Puerto Vallarta is incredible. We could call this article “Dorado City”, but the title is a little too short (Ha Ja). What we are long on is arm burning fishing action. Don’t want a long day, perfect. Looking to save some money, the bay is on fire. Want larger fish, we’ve got all the world class species you could hope for. Frankly, that’s pretty much the fishing report. Don’t worry, I’ll share the details while you try and stay calm.
ell, here we all are, stuck in a pandemic as Puerto Vallarta gets shut down like the rest of the world! This week’s report is about the bay and the possibilities which are mostly ignored. Fish don’t know there’s a pandemic so they’re ignoring the whole situation. With 68 degree water temperatures we’re still seeing the cold water species like Sea Bass, Snappers and Groupers around the river mouths. But there are some “secret” spots in the Bay where you’ll be alone and catch all you want. The point being you don’t need to go to the deep water locations, especially at this time of the year to get some wonderful action in our world famous Banderas Bay of Puerto Vallarta.
This past week Puerto Vallarta has lived up to its “rainy” reputation. Yes folks we have finally started to get rain on a regular basis. As a result, water temperatures have dropped a bit inside the bay to a comfortable “fish” temperature. Yet we’re seeing reduced numbers of Dorado for some reason. Corbetena has slowed a bit, but there are still reports of Marlin and Tuna. Fishing is never predictable, but we’re looking at great conditions, plenty of bait and some world class fishing. It’s going to take some time and effort, but the fishing is great! One interesting thing, the Hurricane season has been very mild. No open water issues at all!
For the last three weeks now I’ve been surprised at the amount of Striped Marlin in the bay. As water temperatures rise we normally see Striped Marlin leaving the area. But when there is so much “Fast Food” why would you leave? Smaller Dorado are in the bay which is encouraging. For now we’re focusing on the “water” conditions. We’re in a “current” transition period where clashing currents can create dirty water and hair pulling frustration.
