You know I wait all year long to write my best articles about Puerto Vallarta’s World Class Fishing so this report is a real treat for me. We are seeing some of the best fishing of the year with no signs of things changing as we’re smack in the middle of tournament season! Superior Conditions, with moderating air temperatures as we move deeper into fall makes for comfortable days with fish the size of your car. These are the “Bucket List” days. The simple title pretty much says it all. Marlin are more abundant and larger. Dorado are increasing in size and Sailfish are all over the place. Yellowfin Tuna are still hanging around, but their size is around 40 to 60 lbs, no larger Tuna like last week, but this can change quickly. Conditions which were already good are now great with Blue water, comfortable water temperatures and plenty of bait make for a winning combination as High Season for Fishing is well underway. It’s time to join the party amigos, consider this your invitation.
Anywhere from El Morro to Corbetena there are some big Dorado to be had. Black and Blue Marlin are also in the area, but there are also Sharks. This means they’re taking any live bait you’re trolling. That’s the bad news, the good news is the Sharks are ignoring lures and taking live and dead baits. This makes your “bag of tricks” very important.

What we’ve been waiting for has finally happened. Corbetena has just improved on itself from last week in a big way. Yellowfin Tuna are still in the area around Corbetena, El Morro is alive With Sailfish and Dorado. The bay is on “fire” fishing wise. Water conditions are just this side of perfect and frankly the party is happening now, with or without you amigos. Right now it’s difficult not to catch fish, no matter which fishing grounds you choose, they’re all producing as we speak!
Every year we wait for October as the fishing always explodes in October! This year we’re blessed with some larger Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado are moving in as well. Sailfish and of course it’s Marlin City with hard to beat conditions of super blue water, plenty of bait and perfect water temperatures. If you’re a fisherman and you don’t head to Corbetena, you may have missed out on the best fishing of YOUR life!
If you’ve been fishing in Puerto Vallarta back before 2007 you remember when heading out to Corbetena was thrilling. It would get your heart pumping as you drop baits coming on to the “rock”. You didn’t know what you were going to catch, but you knew it was going to be big, powerful and draining.
Those that take the challenge of the possibility of not catching fish understand it’s not an exact science. This week the deep water locations of Corbetena and El Banco have changed a little, not that you’d notice! Corbetena is back to seeing Yellowfin Tuna anywhere from 40 to 75 lbs and they’re taking bait! Sailfish are a little thing as are Marlin in the 500 lb range, both blue and black. Dorado are in the 20 to 40 lb range, but they’ve been taking green runners, keep that in your back pocket when heading out. El Banco, forget about it.
Normally at this time of the year you can have a mixed bag. Some weeks can be affected by passing Hurricanes, or rain storms that bring dirty water to the area for days. Then of course these fish have their own ideas of where they want to be so finding them at times can be difficult. We have the basic fishing grounds, but what happens when they’re not where “they’re supposed to be”. This is the case right now, fish are out there, but they’re being a little weird. Bite is a moving target, Baits are plentiful and many times ignored. Weird baits may work, regular baits may not. Late Afternoon bites can throw a monkey wrench in your day if you’re coming back in too early and of course it never hurts to be lucky.
. We’ve seen a few Hurricanes and a few more tropical storms close to the Bay of Banderas and it takes its toll on fishing. But it has been a few days now and things are returning back to normal a little more each day. We’ve also had some heavy rains as a result of these systems forming and moving through the area. Having said that the water is blue and beautiful outside the bay. Fishing always has its challenges but there are fish to be had and somebody is going to get them, it might as well be you amigos.
