Dorado, Marlin and Sailfish, In Between Long liners!

Here we are again in another wonderful week in paradise aka Puerto Vallarta to be exact. In my world, the world of world class fishing we’re still in the best time of the year to boat that bucket list fish. For the next six weeks or so the fishing will be the best it’s going to be for the rest of the year. Marlin and Sailfish are the dominant species right now, Dorado are a close second. Yellowfin Tuna are a bit disappointing for the moment, but this can change in a blink of an eye. For the Sport Fisherman you couldn’t ask for better conditions. I guess that’s why the long liners are out there screwing up the fishing.
We’ve seen the same perfect conditions continue this week at Corbetena, the problem is there have been some super days and some less spectacular days. Like always the size of the fish and species you catch is mostly luck, getting it to the boat is where the real skill comes in. If you head to the Rock this week we’re still seeing large Black Marlin over 500 lbs, Sailfish in tournament winning sizes, Dorado are mostly in the 20 to 30 lb range and of course the Yellowfin Tuna are thin and on the small side. The water is blue and the bait is abundant, Skippies are thinning so make sure you make bait before reaching this area. Dropping baits outside of the Marietta Islands and trolling to Corbetena is probably your best shot. But be patient, nothing is happening automatically, it could take some time to hear a screaming reel, but when it starts, the adrenalin kicks in. Be at the ready! El Banco is so hit and miss, mostly miss, I would suggest sticking to areas that have been more productive lately.
In the area around Punta Mita to the Marietta Islands this week has been hot and cold. If you’re a lucky type then you’ll have a good shot at Sailfish and Dorado in the 20 to 30 lb range and of course smaller than this should be released for another day. Rooster fish are not exactly abundant, but there are always small Roosters to be had, for now not the best species to target in this area. Anywhere in the area of El Morro, Punta Mita and the Marietta Islands is fertile territory! Good luck and again, be patient.
Inside the bay we’re having the same wonderful fishing conditions we’ve had for months now. Dorado seem to be hanging around the La Cruz area in the 15 to 25 lb range. Sailfish have been a little freaky hanging out in this area, several were boated this week here. Many boats are just heading to this area first and it’s been paying off. Rooster fish could be in the surf line as we are seeing some Sardines moving in, not a whole lot, but it’s encouraging. Small Football Tuna are still in the 20 to 35 lb range around Yelapa at the south end of the bay. Many Sailfish and Striped Marlin, yes I said Marlin, have been chasing baits but not taking them at times. So be ready, the Marlin are small and any Marlin under 200 lbs should be released. I know, it sounds like a big fish, but when they can reach over a thousand pounds like Black Marlin can hit, 200 lbs is a baby! Release it! Jack Crevalls are returning and have been taking baits and providing in the bay, arm burning action. Then again, inside the bay has it’s challenges as well. With abundant bait, you may see Dorado chasing lures, but not taking any baits. There lies the challenge amigos, good luck!
The bite this week has been early, getting earlier by the day. For now it’s about 9:00 a.m. and again at about 2:00 pm. A correctly timed eight hour fishing trip can put you on both. Water temperatures are a perfect 84.5 degrees F and the water is a “high visibility” blue. When it comes to baits live bait is king of course. But lures of blue with red flecks or small lines are working well, don’t ask me why! Of course all the old reliable lures are worth trying as well. Also the 62nd Marlin and Sailfish tournament starts on the 16th thru 18th so be sure to check it all out and be part of the fun!
