Welcome to October, arguably the best month of the year to boat a Monster Yellowfin Tuna over 200 lbs at Corbeteña right now! The Sailfish are now running from 70 to 100lbs and are at most of the popular fishing grounds in Puerto Vallarta. The bay is alive action for those looking for shorter days and smaller fish. Punta Mita and area has nice sized Dorado, perfect water temperatures, plenty of bait, what are you waiting for, it won´t get much better than this!
As we move deeper into summer we see conditions to improve as expected in Puerto Vallarta´s world famous fishing grounds. Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna are still abundant and increasing by the day. But this is fishing and while it may seem like fishing in a bucket not everyday is the stuff dreams are made of. With more and more bait choices for these fish it is hard to keep up with what they are striking. This is normally important information since we all can keep a finger on the pulse of fishing when several boats head out daily. But that is not the case and while we know the fishing is great, fewer reports means we´re on a fishing safari looking for Big Game fish daily.. Stay tuned!

For the last three years we have been stuck with unusual weather conditions due to El Nino and the following year, last year, buy El Nina. Extreme water temperature fluctuations have subsided finally this year. As a result we are seeing places like Corbeteña, one of the hot spots for sure, explode with what serious Deep Sea or Sports fisherman are looking for. If you were asked to describe the perfect conditions you would hope to experience while going after huge Game Fish, then this is the time to be here in Puerto Vallarta! The only thing missing at our fishing grounds is you! High season for fishing has taken a great leap forward this week, so hang tight, the fishing just got great!

Bad Economies worldwide and people nervous about what the future may hold has given a lethal Blow to tourism in all of Mexico, not just Puerto Vallarta. As we march into summer and Fishings High season we see that the predictable seasonal rains, down pours would be a better description has all kinds of trees and assorted things running in to the bay of Banderas. The up side is that Dorado are moving into the bay and although they are on the smaller, not tiny side, they are still fun to catch and great to eat! Black and Blue Marlin are around Corbeteña and El Banco, but you may have to work a little for these highly desirable gamefish. Favorable conditions are here in Puerto Vallarta´s world class fishing grounds now. The only thing lacking is YOU!
People ask me all the time when the fishing is best in Puerto Vallarta. That is always a moving target because everyone wants a little something different. My standard answer is Mid July to the second week of January. But for some reason people seem to take that as if the fishing is bad any other time. This of course is not the case, but we do know up front that January, February, March and early April are not Billfish months. But we´re in March now, the water is warming up daily, we have seen Sailfish fifty miles out at The Bank or El Banco in Spanish. There is still plenty of bait in the bay, the water is clearer and bluer every day. Spring is right on time this year with the weather conditions coming in line with expectations and water temperatures moving into the range summer fish prefer! Yes Amigos if you are into fishing, then this is the time of year when things will change for the better. Larger, more abundant gamefish are already here, time to think about your summer fishing trips!
It seems at times that all I do is rewrite what I said the week before and I guess that is normal when your primary subjects, fish in this case, don´t change habits drastically in the winter. Normally for February the sailfish are still here and we´ll see Dorado in diminishing numbers and smaller as time passes. In March we see the water temperatures normally warm up a bit. After a La Nina year I have no clue what to expect. But remember this La Nina Year came after an El Nino year which is hot water temps. Now that we are hopefully moving into a normal current pattern we are seeing warm water species move back in to the area. The fish I am talking about here are primarily Needle Fish. Just as we see the Sierra Mackerals and Jack Crevalls indicate that water temperatures have cooled down come the end of winter in to fall. So it looks like we will see an early spring this year is this is any indication.
