Well, here we are again, it’s that time of the year when tourism drops off drastically and as a result, nobody is going out fishing. Most of my information this week came from private boats, but even then there are just a few. But that isn’t all “doom and gloom” amigos. We’ve seen some interesting, I should say ‘head scratcher” type of things. Stripes Marlin at Corbetena! Yellowfin Tuna running anywhere from 60 to 150 lbs. Even Blue Marlin are out there, but before you get all excited, they’re spread out. You have to take a stab at where you want to go, then go with the plan. The good news is there are some early summer species out there! The bad news, you have to find them. No worries there, we’re here to help and we’re still the only source of Comprehensive, Professional Sportfishing information and Charters. Fishing in Puerto Vallarta is still alive and well for the lucky few left in Puerto Vallarta as we begin to enter the Spring Fishing season in our world-famous fishing grounds.

So, you find yourself at the Rock of Corbetena, now what? Let’s look at our options. The water has warmed up to 80 / 81 Degrees. The water is mostly clean, but not perfectly blue. It’s a warmer version of the clean green water we see in the seasonal changing times of the year. And it’s right on time. What was basically dead last week has come to life. Capt. Manny of Matador boated a 200 lb Blue Marlin half way between Corbetena and the Marietta Islands. Our company boats, the few that went out, found Striped Marlin action, and about 15 miles north of the rock, there were 100 lb Yellowfin Tuna and it looks like more maybe moving in. Those interested in Tuna Safari Trips, we can fix you up and you’ll come back with spaghetti for arms after a full day of Yellowfin Tuna Action. Cubera Snappers are still there for those who don’t mind bottom fishing. But Cubera Snappers will come out of they “holes” and chase schooling baits like Bonito. And there is plenty of bait in the water, so for the lucky out there fishing, you have some decent options. With clean green-ish water, warmer water temperatures and abundant bait, the conditions are good at the very least.

Last week I was pretty much telling anyone who would listen to stay away from the eight-hour distance or duration fishing trips. El Morro, The Marietta Islands to north of Punta Nayarit was just a “no fish” area. That has changed to some degree now. I don’t know if bait moved in or if the currents have changed, but all of a sudden, we’re seeing some action on the eastern side of the Marietta’s. It seems the area west of the Rock of Corbetena to the Isla’s Marietta’s is where the eight-hour action has been happening. Capt. Cesar on our 30ft center console boated a nice Striped Marlin to all of our surprise. On the inside of the Island there were some Roosterfish boated by surprise. And of course the regular players of Bonito, Jacks, Skipjack Tuna were all there of course. The area around Disteladera to just north of Sayulita has some decent Roosterfish action. So, that was a surprise for sure and it this continues I may head out next week. Stay tuned.

And this brings us to the bay and this week there were a few surprises as well in the form of Dorado. Now they’re not big, they never are at this time of the year, but they’re in the 10 lb range and they’re not “keepers”. But that’s encouraging news and with the water temperatures rising, warming air temperatures and with the massive amounts of bait moving into the area, who knows what will happen next. There have been some Roosterfish or good size in the middle of the bay and they were taking trolled baby Bonito or “Bullets” as we call them. Jack Crevalles are still running the entire bay, but have had some decent concentrations in the area around Nuevo Vallarta. But in reality, they’re moving around and can be found just about anywhere in the bay. Throw is the reliable Sierra Mackerels, Bonito, smaller Red Snappers around the structure especially by Yelapa. Remember, the fish is always good in the bay if your willing to go after smaller game fish, that look really good on a dinner plate. And there is always some decent bottom fishing in the bay, small grouper, Snappers, maybe a seabass, Snook for sure. It’s something to think about and again, action is action amigos!

As I’ve already mentioned, the fishing is spread out and soon we’ll be moving into “Breeding Season”. We’re lucky this mostly happens in the down season between Easter and July when we start to see the summer travelers. With the “Godzilla El Nino” being predicted for this year, we don’t know what the fishing will be like. We have seen some blotchy RedTide and the water isn’t a perfect blue, but it’s clean and the fish don’t seem to have any issues with it. But for the willing you can still have world class Yellowfin Tuna action if you’re willing to do what it takes and that’s a 15 hrs. Tuna Safari. You boat yourself four of five of these and you’ll have all the Tuna you can eat for the next year. And, remember, for Master Baiter’s Clients, we will freeze your catch, no matter how many pounds it is. And we’ll keep it until you’re ready to leave. We also have these new “freezer” Cooler packs that can transport your catch as a carry-on! And it’s reusable, not to mention cool. Getting back to the point, Water temperatures have jumped about two degrees in two weeks. Flying fish, Sardinas, Ballyhoos, Goggle eyes, you name it, there is no shortage of bait in the area. The bite for Mackerels is an early bite, but their neighbors are taking baits at around 08:30. So hit the early Mackerels that are very tasty, then go for other gamefish about 08:00. One interesting thing is there has been a lot of attention to Plastics or Lures of pink, blue and Green. And there you go for this week.
Until next week, don’t forget to kiss your fish!
