This week we’ve seen a tropical storm from Cancun head west over land which has created the heavy rain we need in the mountains. With the rain water comes organic materials like leaves, seeds, roots all sorts of things which fish love to feed on. The trash line is the fisherman’s friend and we see the level of fish move up dramatically when we hit this time of the year. Short trips of six to eight hours will put you on Dorado, Football sized Yellowfin Tuna, Bonito, Sierra Mackerels’ and the list goes on. Water temperatures are perfect and the amount of bait in the water is mind blowing. The conditions are perfect as we move into fishing’s High Season here in Puerto Vallarta, Stand by for details….
I have been looking at the present conditions and trying to not get too excited about the things I am seeing. From my desk in Marina Vallarta I am on top of things and i see what has been happening with our world famous fishing grounds. One thing that is happening is there is just a ton of bait everywhere in the bay and outside the bay! Water temperatures are hovering in the 82 to 84 degree mark which is perfect for Yellowfin Tuna and Black Marlin. Skip Jack Tuna as a bait is everywhere. Some are in the twenty pound range, others are bullets. But the size of the bait is not important, what is important is there are fish to be caught and you don’t need to spend a fortune right now to have the time of your life!

Yellowfin Tuna are still heavy in the area, but they are moving or I should say thinning out a little in the bay. The last few weeks a four hour day fishing off Yelapa or Chimo was a no brainer and it was actually better fishing here than at the deep water locations. Well that is changing now as we see the numbers of Yellowfin Tuna in the 10 to 30 lb range moving around the bay out to the point of Cabo Corrientes where ten miles off the light house you can still hit Black Marlin in the smaller range. Yellowfin Tuna can run up to 100 lbs on rare instances and of course there are Sailfish as we mentioned earlier. Last week we were changing lures every fifteen minutes, now we are seeing simple old fashioned plugs like Cedar Plugs work. I gave some painted plugs of purple to Capt. Tory off Bella Del Mar the other day which he said worked great. Of course he lost one of the two I gave him, so we restocked the boat and they’re out there now giving them a work out. Don’t be afraid to switch your rigs if they aren’t working in 20 minutes or so. Anything is possible and the possibilities change every day. Keep your Mexican ears open on the radio as well, many times they captains are sharing what is working in different areas and this can be a help to you as well. That is if you understand Spanish, so have the crew keep an open ear.
Normally as we enter June we don’t expect much in the way of Tuna Fishing, but then again we only think we can predict what is going to happen around Puerto Vallarta and the world famous fishing grounds we are known for. Famous or not, we never really know what we’re going to get out there. So I guess fishing is like a box of chocolates, you never really know what you’re going to get until you sink your teeth into it! Right now we are sinking our teeth into Yellowfin Tuna, nothing considered monsters or Cows for sure, but big enough to be worth your while and fuel dollar to head out to El Banco! Now that I’ve got your panties wet, the Yellowfin are the primary species in any of the fishing grounds right now! So now what are you going to do? Summer is here and it´s time to put your money where your finned fantasy lies. Stay tuned!

Fish, Fish, where are the fish? For the last few weeks we´ve been playing this game in our world famous fishing grounds. Some days you find the fish, other days you have to hunt for the fish! Some days are good, others are bad and still others you will find fish and not get them to pay any attention to what you have to offer. Now this may be frustrating, but in May, we´re happy to have these topsy turvy conditions. The bottom line this week is the conditions have moved from iffy at best to fair if you’re on a boat that doesn´t mind looking for fish!
I have been a little reluctant to write this fishing report since what was working well has suddenly come to a screeching halt. This is not exactly unexpected, but it still isn´t something we can be happy about. Water temperatures are hovering in the 78 degree range with changing currents. As a result the water has turned a mercy-clear brown at the Marietta Islands and will probably be spreading to El Banco and Corbeteña. May is a transition month and the winter fish are moving out as the summer fish are rolling in slowly. With tourism down, I guess that if this is going to happen, it is a good thing it is happening now. Now this is not to say there are no fish to be had…. Stay tuned!
OK, first things first, the water temperatures are in the 76 to 78 degree mark and have increased rapidly in the last week. The humidity (79%) in the air is thick and the temperatures are only about 81. We are on the verge of an early rainy season, yet we are late for Sailfish by about a month and half. From this point forward we will see some rapid changes in air temperatures, water temperatures and water clarity. With the current changes and the soon to come seasonal rains there may be some dirty water issues, like we all have learned to expect. But for now the water is a kinda clear brown / green color. Not blue, but clear enough to see your bait! With plenty of Google Eyes on hand you will catch the early season billfish off Corbeteña. In fact 7 miles off the Rock you´ll find Sails and Stripers! Just find your way out there and you´ll catch fish right now! If you are looking for Blue water by the way it is about 100 miles out. This is good news even if it is a little on the far side.
Gone or going are the family types who want to just go out in the bay for a short day, see some whales and catch Moby Dick! The Month of May is one of the worst for businesses in PV. Even the Mexican Nationals desert this jewel of a city. So much for people, now comes High Season for Fishing! As winter lingers on this has to be the longest run of Rooster Fish I have ever seen! For weeks now we have been seeing these Mohawk headed demons at the Marietta Islands and off Sayulita.
