Winter with 120 lb Yellowfin Tuna at El Banco, What??

Written by: Stan Gabruk

Normally come March, I am almost apologizing for the poor fishing and cookie cutter reports. But this year, as was a few years ago, the water is full of summer species fish. Amazing, but true, we won´t discuss El Nino quite yet, but whatever the cause, there were and possibly still are 120lb Yellowfin Tuna off El Banco about ten miles to the north of the high spots. In a word, ¨Strange¨ at best! We all know fish are where you find them and for now anyway, they can be found off all the world famous fishing grounds of Banderas Bay.02 27 2012 120 lb Rooster Fish, Andele,Capt Kawie wText 600pxls

We have continued to see unseasonably warm water temperatures and this is one of the main reasons water temperatures are hovering in the 70´s. Southern California is seeing these flying Squid that follow currents that are normally only found in Japan. This is not a new thing, but it is new for this time of the year amigo. So we have Yellowfin Tuna gorging themselves on not only squid, they´re hitting Sardines and krill squid as well. We had a couple of boats head out the other day we found the fish, just couldn´t get them to pay any attention to the beautiful baits we were presenting! Now that will drive you crazier than your wife spending money and telling you how much she just saved you!

If you have the time and inclination you will find fish everywhere, the challenge is getting them to pay attention to your bait as mentioned. Rooster Fish are stuffing themselves at every corner on Krill squid and Sardines. If you find Roosters in the 35 lb range and larger, then they don´t eat, you better find squid jigs or start running Hoochies amigo. Remember, Elephants eat peanuts too, small works! Corbeteña is still seeing a few Striped Marlin, Bull Dorado ten miles west of Corbeteña are plentiful! Cubera Snappers coming up after the Sardines, Wahoo between 60 and 75 lbs, Amber Jacks, and YF Tuna. Nothing is automatic amigo, so keep your witts with you!

Pretty much the same story at El Banco, Andelé went out to El Banco, got there, the bite was on. 15 hook-ups in 8 hrs of fishing. Nonstop action and burning arms was the order of the day. Yellowfin from who knows where are heavy and running with Dolphin between the high spots and twenty miles north towards the Tres Maria Islands. Who needs a long trip like that when you can have them in a twelve hour day and be home before the little woman notices after a day in the spa! Check the latest report or contact me before going out to make sure you have the latest fishing conditions.02 25 2013 Andele, YF Tuna 120 lbs, Capt Kawi and crew 04 Text

The Marietta Islands are running strong, but there are times when you´ll come in wondering what happened. Rooster fish at El Morro as well, all running large in the range of 35 to 50 lbs and even larger. No real Dorado to speak of, small if any, but the Red Snappers are picking up the slack in the 25 to 35 lb range. Pompano to 30 lbs and great tasting, Bonito, Sierra Mackerals, and more. So keep this in mind, they´re there, but they may not be hungry!
