Water Temperatures Jump, Dorado thin out!

After what seemed like a whole season, but was in fact just a few weeks we are now back in what seems to be our normal summer pattern of Tropical Storms turning into Hurricanes! By the time you read this the storm will have already hit mid Baja, hopefully not doing too much damage. With Hurricane Octave passing us, it has once more screwed up the fishing with the high pressure pushing fish out of its path. At the moment this article was being written I spied another weather disturbance that was forming just south of Acapulco. The projections show it heading for the Baja area as well. Not a good thing for the Bisbee´s tournament is coming up and in the last five years three tournaments have been either shortened or concerned. This has in fact only really affected the deep water locations, now the water temperatures, that´s another story…. Stay tuned.

We have seen the comfortable water temperatures shoot up to 86 degrees plus again this past week. This of course has sent Yellowfin Tuna to the depths once more. Dorado are moving into cooler waters and getting smaller as well. We´re still seeing evening rains as it is the season. This is how the Trash line is formed and is of monster size off Punta Mita. This is also the best area for the moment to find nice sized Dorado in the 40 lb range and Sailfish in the 100 lb range. Once more this area is the place to be.

Corbeteña and El Banco are cooling off fishing wise, but we know the water temperatures are soaring. Cubera Snappers are abundant to 70 lbs at both spots. Black and Blue Marlin are still hanging in the area, but not exactly abundant. Sailfish, they don´t seem to care much water temps, they are looking for food and a full belly. No problem, there is so much bait out there in the form of Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna and Google Eyes they are not going hungry. Water can still be dirty, it has been for the last week, but it clears up around three to five miles before you reach the rock at Corbeteña. For now, I´d hang tight for word of fish returning in more sizeable numbers.

Marietta Islands and El Morro are still seeing their share of decent sized Sailfish, over 80 lbs. If you are lucky enough, there have been very large Rooster fish with the Sardines back in the area. Small Dorado if there is a lot of bait, Skip Jacks, Bonito and the list of regulars no matter what the water heats up to.

Inside the bay has been interesting. It seems the water temperatures are tad lower so we are still seeing Dorado around the trash line in the bay, may be the rain water cooling things down. Bonito to 35 lbs, Skip Jacks to around 45 lbs near Yelapa. Sailfish have set up house off the La Cruz area as well. Snook or Robalo are hanging out in front of the river mouths in the sweet water they love. Take a short day and forget about just shooting for Yellowfin, Dorado, Sails… go for something that you can eat, taste great and are abundant. Why people ignore this fine white meat blue plate special is just a mystery to me.

For now I would keep an eye on the weather in PV if you´re a local looking to catch fish. While the seas have not been rough, this is a blessing. Water temps are running in the above favorable ranges and with the recent past history we may be in for more of the same. We all know things can change before I finish this article, but you still need to be informed so keep coming back for more.
