Marina Vallarta Las Palmas I Local 3

Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Seems Like Summer Fishing!

Written by Stan Gabruk

As we move deeper into winter fishing, we´re seeing species that are normally long gone hanging around and we´re happy for it. Visitors to Puerto Vallarta have fantash fishing options with Dorado at the Marietta Islands, Tuna at El Banco, Corbeteña has Striped Marlin and the bay if just full of fish. Just when you think you´ve have the seasons and species figured out, guess what… It´s fishing!

Capt Kawi does it again at Corbeteña, Pictured is my friend Brad…. Owner and partner of Andele… 35 ft Luhrs Convertible

The deep water fishing grounds are still producing nicely even though they really should be so slow you couldn´t find a pulse. About ten miles north of El Banco, large Dolphins are running with Yellowfin Tuna over 150 lbs . They´re hitting Sardines with an attitude. Striped Marlin in the 250 lb range are everywhere as well. Dorado are smaller, but still in the area running 25 to 40 lbs. Jack Crevalls everywhere, Bonito, Cubera Snappers to 60 lb, you may even hook a Sailfish. All and all I can´t remember when El Banco was firing like this, at this time of the year. For the Tuna Fanatics, they´re  calling your name.

Corbeteña is also seeing Yellowfin Tuna, but they´re in the 60 lb range. We won´t complain about this. Striped Marlin, Sails, Jack Crevalls, Bonito, Cubera Snappers. Pretty much the same as El Banco but with smaller Yellowfin Tuna.

Sailfish are still running north of Punta Mita

The Marietta Islands and off the point of Punta Mita has recharged itself and is living up to its reputation. Rooster fish are still hitting live bait and shinny lures. Running in the 35 to 55 or larger range you´re sure to have some arm burning action. Dorado, yes Dorado are also just off the island which are also running 25 to 35 lbs. Sailfish have also shown up again as well as Punta Mita. Both areas are an eight hour day trip, but if you are in Sayulita or Punta Mita a short day trip off the beach is worth its weight in gold. Red Snappers running 25 to 30 lbs are great tasting and on light tackle are a ton of fun. Skippies, Bonito, Jack Crevalls and the list goes on. Just get there and find out!

Inside the bay is a fantasy for smaller game fish. Sierra Mackerals running in the 30 lb range have been a welcome surprise for sure! Jack Crevalls everywhere, Snappers near structure and of course there are still football Yellowfin Tuna hanging around Yelapa. It´s wonderful in the bay now and four to six hour days work wonders for smaller types…

Sierra Mackeral are great fighters and get fairly large… great for younger anglers and older types on light tackle

For now the water temperatures are hovering around 75 degrees, perfect for Striped Marlin and even Sailfish. But the water is clean and blue with tons of Sardines all through the bay and around the islands. Rooster fish seem to be happy where they are so this hopefully will continue. The fishing grounds are also still empty so you couldn´t ask for much more amigos, but of course we always do!
