Marina Vallarta Las Palmas I Local 3

Marlin, Tuna, Dorado, Thank You El Nino

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

I know this is a strange title, but it´s accurate and appropriate. While El Nino will present problems for fishing come September, for now we´re seeing summer species in the dead of winter. Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Rooster fish, Snappers, Jack Crevalls and the incredible list just goes on. Unusually warm water temperatures will remain with us until summer, this means that out of season species will be available to those who will never be here in the heat of summer. This is a genuine opportunity to boat a bucket list fish and still be comfortable. For those with the time, money and frankly the luck to be here in Puerto Vallarta, you have a chance to experience world class fishing in the best possible conditions. If this doesn´t get your heart beating you better change the battery in your pace maker!02 14 2014 Tom Robinson, Guanatuna, 80 lb Amber Jack on gaff 600 pxls wText

Before I get started, no matter where you head out to, you will catch your fill of fish. Bait is abundant to the tenth power. Water temperatures are still running in the early summer ranges of 79 to 81 degrees (No kidding). And the water conditions of Blue / Blue water are just like summer at the deep water locations. For those in the know, you will never find conditions like this in late February unless El Nino is pushing the currents.

As mentioned last week, the area between the Marietta Islands to Corbeteña, then over to El Banco (The Golden Triangle) has turned into a fish producing machine. It´s incredible, just off the Marietta Islands we´re seeing everything! Rooster fish are running in the 35 to 50 lb plus range and they´re taking anything shiny. Baits, lures, your car keys, put a hook on it and throw it in, it´s so easy it´s almost scary. Dorado, yes I said Dorado in the 25 to 40 lb range. Bonito running 30 to 45 lbs, Cubera Snappers and Amber Jacks in excess of 50 lbs (jig baits for larger fish). Black Marlin in the 300 lb plus range, Blue Marlin in the 250 lb range and Striped Marlin in the 200 lb range. If you´re not saying ¨WoW¨ by now, you should be. For your fuel dollar this is the best bet. Throw in the Whales and the ability to do some snorkeling on Magnifico and you have a ¨full Meal Deal¨ that comes with your day on the water.

Corbeteña has blue squared water conditions. Perfect water temps and plenty of bait. The results of these unusually perfect fishing conditions are Black Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado to 50 lbs, Bonito, Jack Crevalls of course, large Cubera Snappers, Amber Jacks, Rainbow Runners and the list goes on. Well worth your fuel dollar, but Corbeteña is in the Golden Triangle so it´s part of the mix. Can´t say enough good things about Corbeteña right now.02 26 2014 Ferguson Group, Magnifico, 8 hrs, 50 lb Rooster 600 Pxls

The same pretty much goes for El Banco, All species of Marlin, Dorado at 50 plus pounds, Sailfish, Jack Crevalls of course and Yellowfin Tuna running with Spinner Dolphin the YF tuna are in the 80 to 120 lb range like last week. Now before you get all excited and head to the high spots the YF Tuna have not exactly been taking baits for the few days we ran into them this last week. It´s strange to see 80 plus Yellowfin Tuna run with Spinner Dolphin like this, although it is a welcome surprise. This will last only a few days at most, so hang in there and check back later. Bait is amazing, a swath of ten square blocks of Skip Jack Tuna (Skippies) will blow your mind as you see these world class fish just slashing through this WalMart Sized bait ball! The Tuna by the way are 16 to 20 miles north of El Banco to be more specific.

Inside the bay, four or six hours is perfect for the person who has time on his mind and doesn´t want to be on the water all day. For you we´ve got some serious arm burning action. Jack Crevalls (of course), bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, Needle fish, Sierra Mackerals and the list is never ending. You´ll have a great day and four hours is just perfect for the younglings. 02 15 2014 Capt Tory, Cubera Snapper at Marietta Islands, 60 lbs wText

We do have one small problem I am sure you can appreciate. That problem is the bait you run needs to be larger than three inches or the bait will take your bait! No kidding, you need to run at least six inch baits to get larger fish or the bait fish will eat your bait. It´s an interesting problem we can live with! As far as baits to run, again lures larger than three inches in length. Google Eyes, Rangers, Poppers, Skippies, these fish will hit just about anything presented to them. It reminds me of my ex wife and the shoe sale at Nordstroms, these fish are in a frenzy and they can´t get enough of what you have to offer amigo, so get out there!

Until next time don’t forget to kiss your fish and remember at Master Baiter’s Sportfishing & Tackle “ We Won’t Jerk You Around”!
