Full Moon Cramps Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish and Dorado, Marietta´s on Fire! Written by Stan Gabruk
With the warm weather continuing into unseasonable, water temperatures remain in the prefect range for all the usual gamefish we love to write about. Bait Balls exploding all over the deep water locations of Corbeteña and El Banco. Blue water, and deserted fishing grounds. You can literally head out to Corbeteña and be the only boat for as far as the eye can see. For this time of the year this is highly unusual and creates an opportunity to have the fishing grounds all to yourself, now that is a luxury. The Full moon phase of the month has done what it always does, pushed the bite to the early morning hours. Fishing remains steady and reliable into December, give yourself a Christmas Present, you deserve it!
Ok, Inside the bay, for the visitor looking to have some action in a short day of six hours or less you will have a great time with Yellowfin Footballs off Yelapa still, but getting smaller for the moment around 20 to 30 lbs. Dorado are in the bay, but they´re not keepers, so release the babies and every female. Bonito, Needle Fish around the structure areas. All and all if you´re looking for some fun on the water, you will, but you won´t catch anything you´d want to mount.
For those with a little more interest, the Marietta Islands are a fishing machine. Sailfish in the 75 to 90 lb range are still the primary player in the area and seem to be getting even more prominent late in the fishing season. Dorado are perfect sized at 30 lbs. If you find yourself six miles or so south at El Morro there are some serious bull Dorado in the 45 lb to ? range. Anything is possible and so far this is the best it has been for Dorado this year. Snappers are in and out running 25 lbs, Bonito, and more. Again, deserted fishing grounds are a true luxury!
Corbeteña this week has seen a drop in the number of Yellowfin tuna strikes. Not exactly unusual during a full moon and they will be back shortly. For the time being Sailfish, Large Bull Dorado to 50 lbs, Cubera Snappers at 50 lbs, Black and Blue Marlin are anywhere from 500 lbs to 750 lbs. Marlin are being a little fickle, they will whap your bait several times, then leave. So Marlin fishing is a challenge right now. West of Corbeteña for the last few weeks has been the place to be, but for now you may come up empty handed. Of course things change quickly so check with me about the bite. Early hours not much before sun-up is a good time to be there until mid morning. After that, go for the other usual players at the rock.
The story at El Banco and Corbeteña is almost an exact match this past week, but the Tres Maria Islands (The Prison Islands) are on fire. If you have the time, it´s a sixteen hour day minimum and the money, we have Yellowfin Tuna to 300 lbs in a frenzy. Now remember to keep your distance, but if YOU are a Yellowfin Tuna guy and nothing else will do, then this is where you need to be. Nothing fancy, run baby Bonito (bullets as we call them) and get ready, you´ve got a fight on your hands. Not really many other species here at these islands, but you´re going there for Yellowfin Tuna and that´s the end of the story. There have been rumors of Mexican boats being confiscated by the Mexican Navy and tales of how others inside the limit have gotten warnings. Remember, they can take your boat and keep you on the prison island if they so choose, Useful information to keep your butt out of a ringer.
