Fantasy Winter Fishing Continues, Marlin Hang-out

Written by: Stan Gabruk owner of Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle

Warm water conditions, perfect for late spring are happening right now in our world famous fishing grounds as El Nino flexes its muscles. Water temperatures hovering in the upper 70`s to low 80´s are keeping Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna in the area. Insanely abundant bait is just the cherry on the top for these summer species as they continue to hang-out (in winter) in Banderas Bay. For the Angler who knows his stuff, he knows that fishing in a perfect and comfortable climate is never spoken in the same sentence as ¨Black Marlin¨. My suggestion, get your butt on the water and catch something spectacular and take advantage of your good fortune!02 27 2014 Travis Cusimano, Shannon friend 06 Tail wrapped and dead Marlin

I never thought I´d be writing summer time ¨cookie cutter¨ fishing articles in the middle of winter, but here we are. With warm weather and perfect water conditions there is really no reason for these fish to take a powder when it all feels comfortable like a favorite pair of jeans. Such is the case in the Golden Triangle, the area between El Banco, Corbeteña and the Marietta Islands. Fertile ground for Marlin, Sailfish and Dorado right now. It´s not too complicated, get there, get a bait in front of them and get ready for some heart pounding action. Black Marlin are running in the area of 350 to 600 lbs, Blue Marlin at 250 lbs and Striped Marlin are about 175 to 200 lbs. Dorado at El Banco on the high spots, larger Bull Dorado in the 50 lb range to be exact. Sailfish, Marlin, and if lucky some spinner Dolphin with Yellowfin Tuna running partners in the 50 to possible 120 lb range. Not exactly everywhere, but if you find them, be grabbing distance from a pole. Right now when you catch bait, make sure you´re using lures large enough to catch larger baits. Smaller lures will not get you the baits you´re shooting for which for now are bullet Bonito or slightly larger. Bullet Bonito baits are like candy to your eight year old. Having the right bate makes the difference, especially if you´re targeting Rooster fish!

Speaking of Rooster fish, the area around the Marietta Island over to El Morro is alive with these comb headed demons. If you have bullet Bonito baits these fish are strong, aggressive and have an attitude. You will at first think you hooked a submarine the way the pole reacts! Snappers 35 to 50 lbs, Jack Crevalls, Sierra Mackerals, Needle fish, Pompano, Skip jack Tuna, and more. Sailfish about eight miles off the Rock islands of punta Mita.08 10 2008 Discovery, Thomas Harris, 10hrs, Corb. Sail, Marlin 009

If you´re heading out to the legal areas around the Tres Maria Island there are some nice sized Yellowfin Tuna in the 160 lb range and up to over 200 lbs. Single day fishing trips to the Tres Maria Islands are a fourteen to sixteen hour, it´s a long haul. For those who are putting in the time, the rewards are worth the effort. Running downriggers to get baits down from the surface will get you YF Tuna bragging rights. Big enough for a real fight, small enough where you don´t have to hand the pole of and this sized YF Tuna are great tasting! Remember to observe the 15 mile restricted area from the prison islands and the federales will leave you alone. This is best done overnight for those who want to catch the early bite!

Details: With blue / blue water the fishing conditions are at their best. Abundant bait and perfect water temperatures, those here in Puerto Vallarta have opportunities to boat world class gamefish that if not for the El Nino water currents would not be available. This is bonefied opportunity amigos! The bite is mid morning right now and mid afternoon. If you´re running lures use Purple or Green and Yellow mixed. 539570_10151615223003040_436785500_n
