It’s been an interesting week as we move deeper into peak fishing season in Puerto Vallarta. Marlin are at Corbetena and off Punta Mita, Sailfish are picking up in numbers. Dorado are around any debris or stump, all with perfect water temperatures. Massive bait, perfect days, it’s wide open and anything is possible out there.

Once again this week we’re seeing what we’ve seen weeks before, spread out fishing. Blue Marlin are moving back and forth between Corbetena and El Banco. This week there is very little information from El Banco as most boats are on shorter day trips or just heading straight to the rock aka Corbetena. El Banco has been experiencing the same sort of conditions as Corbetena, it’s the fuel dollar that will hold local fishing companies back from going there with little to no information available I can understand this. Blue Marlin are anywhere between 400 to 700 lbs roaming the area. Same goes for Black Marlin 600 lbs upwards and Sailfish. Sailfish numbers are inching their way upwards. Be advised that Porpoise, Flipper type Dolphin have been hanging around the “rock” and they’ve been stealing your baits. it’s a good and bad thing .. But you’re at about 55 to 62% shot of boating a Marlin, good luck.  

Closer in the Marietta Islands has found a pulse this week! Sailfish off the back side have been increasing in numbers. Trash lines with Debris, trash or even stumps will produce Dorado, smaller sure around 10 to 12 lbs on average, but there are 20 to 25 lb beauties also. Live bait works best, but if you can’t find debris, the Dorado Safari will be difficult at best, for now. Jack Crevalls are mostly missing but we’re seeing the Skip Jack (Skippies) running six to eight pounds see their numbers increasing to the point of massive. Bonito to 35 lbs and of course plenty of edible reef type fish. Hopefully this area will keep showing signs of life, normally a great area for Rooster fish as well as Sailfish and Dorado, stay tuned. One interesting this, at Punta Mita you’ll find blue water, then as you head out towards El Banco there is a four mile “Strip” of clean green water, an indication of cool water currents, so things could be changing out there. Water temperatures have slipped a bit, so this is interesting. Once past the clean green colder water it’s beautiful blue water and warm, so again, be advised. There have been Football Tuna running the area and with all the “Skippies” you’d expect they’d take live bait, but what’s working better than live bait is Cedar Plug lures. Yep, the oldest and most ignored lure in your “bag of tricks” is working well, many times the only thing that’s working. So make sure you have an adequate number of these lures, two would not be enough in these conditions amigos. 

The bay is still alive and well as long as you remember the seasonal rains are still happening. This means you will find dirty water throughout the bay, but the currents will open up clean areas. But to be straight the trash line is producing smaller Dorado as it normally will. At the south end of the bay last week near Yelapa we were seeing Football tuna in the 35 lb range, not hearing much about this now, but Football Tuna will be in the area normally so it’s always worth a shot. Bonito to 30 lbs, a few Jack Crevalls at 30 lbs, Snook near the river mouths and frankly anything is possible in the bay.

The bite has moved to an earlier hour these days, I suggest being where you want to be by 8:00 a.m. and the late bite seems to be about 5:30 in the afternoon. The bait situation is once again a perfect foundation for drawing in hungry fish. Around Punta Mita there are massive amounts of flying fish, Skippies, Bonito and even some Football Tuna to 35 lbs. No bait issues but one interesting development is at times, for Marlin especially, Dead bait has been working. As mentioned earlier if you’re in the area of any Tuna, Cedar plugs have been the best working lure. If you only have one Cedar plug lure and nothing else is working, well that’s your bad amigo, you’ve been informed so don’t make this mistake. If running lures, besides the Cedar Plugs, Petroleros and Iguanas are old reliable for a reason. Water temperatures have dropped a bit ranging from 83 to 86 degrees. Perfect by any measurement.
