One of the nice things about this time of the year is as things change, it is always to the positive. Water temperatures continue to increase as the humidity increases as well. Just a few signs summer is slowly makes its presence known. The days are a little warmer each day, the bait is moving into the bay, Skip Jacks or Football Tuna are chasing that bait. Larger fish are chasing them and we´re seeing the results. Dorado are at their preferred locations of the Marietta Islands, Punta Mita, Corbeteña, El Banco and at a floating long anywhere in the bay. Blue Marlin are starting to move in, which is early for them, June is more normal. But the biggest indication that we´re aggressively moving into summer is the first tropical storm warning came into my inbox this morning. We normally don´t see tropical storms or Hurricanes which they can turn into in May. NOAH is predicting heavier weather or I should say rain and tropical storms for the Americas this year and believe it or not, for fishing that is not bad news either. So stay tuned, we have something to talk about this week!

Sailfish off Punta Mita and Small Dorado

With the down turn in tourism there really are very few boats going out fishing which of course makes it difficult to report on what happened when there is nobody going out. But those that are going out are doing well. Dorado at the Marietta Islands are getting a touch bigger in the 25 lb range, Snappers are still taking bait in the 20 to30lb range, Skip Jacks are coming in the area as well, with the increases in baitfish Rooster fish have been nice sized in the 35 lb range as well. Sailfish off the Reefs are becoming more abundant as they should be. Jack Crevalls are thinning out as they should with warmer water moving into the area. All and all this area is still one of the hot spots for those looking for action and not a huge price tag. We´re moving into that time of the year when what is happening at the Marietta Islands will most likely be happening off Punta Mita. Which can be said for now. Rooster Fish off the Anclote area (Sayulita), Dorado off the point and if you were lucky enough to find a log, dead something, anything small bait fish can hide around you will find Dorado. Buoys from commercial fisherman when found are always a gold mine. They don´t much like the idea of you fishing their little ¨stand¨… Oh well.

The area off the Marietta islands have been sailfish city all the way out to Corbeteña. Football Tuna, Cubera Snappers, Rainbow Runners and Amber jacks about 45 lbs it you don´t mind some bottom fishing. Blue Marlin sightings but as yet nothing boated to get any pictures. Stripers still in the area on the smaller side of 175 to 250 lbs. Those targeting Wahoo now would be a great time to take a shot off the fingers to the south side under the water. These ridges are about the best place to find Wahoo early season.

El Banco is also seeing smallish Striped Marlin, Rainbows, Yellowfin in the 60 to 80 lb range, Sailfish are like everywhere else. We have seen some flying fish moving in. If they do remember if you´re trolling you´ll have to run a little faster to mimic baits. Another reason to run wire leaders and cable rigged lures is Wahoo are no stranger to El Banco and can show up about now. As a non schooling fish Wahoo are loners for the most part. The will school, but not in huge schools like Yellowfin Tuna, Snappers, Dorado etc. Be prepared and come in with something the cheap boats aren´t equipped for and never get.

Inside the bay, it´s all Skippies, but we have seen some needle fish which are the first indications of warm waters moving in.

The famous ¨they ¨are predicting via NOAA that in this corner of the world we will see heavier than normal rain and humidity. We already know it´s going to be hot enough to warm pools to hot tub temps. We are seeing now the first tropical storm of the year which is early by any measurement. This storm is not predicted to turn into a Hurricane before it fizzles. But this is an early indication of summer moving in aggressively. Update: The tropical storm turned into a tropical depression that is not moving at all and will fizzle out shortly.

Normally the first weeks of June have the first signs of Blue and Black Marlin move in suddenly in a wave that last just a few days. Now this has happened consistently for years so we can look for this, but expecting is another thing. For those who want to plan a summer trip for Monster Yellowfin Tuna and who have no interest in heading out 80 miles to the Tres Maria Islands then Mid August is when the larger Yellowfin Normally show up. Now this year they may show up a little early so keep your ears on. But trips targeting Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin would find September and October are your best ¨local¨ chances to boat a Monster over 300 lbs, but 200 lb Cows will be abundant. Those looking for a world record fish could possibly during this time frame. Fishings high season is normally extended into the holiday season. Christmas and new Years still have warm water and Trophy sized Gamefish for those looking for cooler weather and no rain.

One thing to take into consideration when booking trips for here in Fish City is the weather. Summer is when we south of the American border see´s our weather. Tropical Storms, Hurricanes, unexpected systems springing up, trust me, we have weather. Hurricanes always go to the north, rain is a daily thing. But hitting the fishing grounds right after a Hurricane has passed is when you get Trophy sized everything.

Tropical Depression fizzling out and moving slowly, Early For These!

Me, I am just pickled tink we have fish. If you are in the area looking to head out, you will find virtually empty fishing ground when it comes to boats and people.
Written by Stan Gabruk

For those of you who have been in the Puerto Vallarta area you know that come early may the heat begins and the humidity takes off. When this happens we know that the seasonal visitors that melt in the sun will soon be heading back north to cooler weather and familiar settings. For those of us who wait for these late spring and summer conditions to arrive, we´re excited about what this means. For those unfamiliar with what I am talking about, early May is the transition period we see between spring and summer fishing. Cooler water is becoming a thing of the recent past. With the raising humidity comes warmer water moving into the area, naturally. One of the signals that summer is just around the corner is when the bait fish invade the bay again, like we have happening now. First the bait, then the fish. One step at a time as the bay if filling with bait. Now we have some great fishing for May right now, but things are improving daily and it looks like for the first time in three years Puerto Vallarta fishing will be somewhat normal based on past history expectations. Me, I am just pickled tink we have fish. If you are in the area looking to head out, you will find virtually empty fishing ground when it comes to boats and people. But the fish are there, the conditions are good (not great) and we have fish for the table tonight Amigo. Time to drain those fuel dollars from that special account you have the wife knows nothing of. World Class Game fishing is coming back to Puerto Vallarta as we speak.

Come this time of the year tourism is down and I guess that is not a bad thing when the transition does finally come as it is now. For the last three years we have sat and wondered what was going to happen to the water conditions and when we would have trophy fish in the bay. Well they´re not quite there yet, but they will be soon. For now fishing in the bay other than for bait is on the weak side. Four to six hour trips will produce small fish, nothing new there. Now with a few extra dollars you can find yourself at the Marietta islands where the action really is. So for now the bay is not your best option. Enough said ….

Dorado at Corbeteña, Michael Khounnaia

Heading out to the Marietta islands you see bait balls and birds everywhere, but these are small snappers and baby Dorado chasing this bait. As you reach the Marietta Islands you will find clean water and fish! Rooster fish are still taking baits running in the 35lb range. Snappers are still hanging running 20 to 35lbs if lucky. Jack Crevalls are finally thinning out, Skip jacks have moved into the area, Dorado are here but they´re still spawners… Young Dorado less than a year old anywhere from six pounds up to about 15. Remember to leave the babies, especially the females full of eggs! Just off El Morro there are nice sized sailfish taking any well presented bait. But they´ll normally take live bait first, so keep that in mind. This area is well worth your time and fuel dollar now, so if you´ve been waiting, the wait is over.

Corbeteña has had several Striped Marlin boated just East of the rock about five miles. This area has it´s days and the last few days have been especially fruitful. Running anywhere from 175 to 250 lbs, they are not large by any expectation, but they are there! Dorado is running larger here in the 30 lb and up range. Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Cubera Snappers and the possibility of Wahoo. We should start seeing Yellowfin Tuna in the next few weeks moving in, but of course they are normally smaller so we call these Footballs. For now there may be the Stray Yellowfin Tuna, but don´t have much in the way of expectations.

El Banco is still out there, most people are flying past the high spots on the way out to the Tres Maria islands. The high spots are hot and cold for the most part. You can find Yellowfin Tuna about ten to fifteen miles past the high spots for those who are interested. Reports of 60to 120 pounders are being boated. Sailfish, Striped Marlin as well, Cubera Snappers, Rainbow Runners are the players for now. My suggestion is wait for some more positive news regarding what is being boated here before heading out to this area favorite.

NOT much news from the Tres Maria Islands these days as tourism has come almost to a halt as it does in May. Keep your ears open, when fish are boated in this area many times they will make the international news.

Punta Mita, normally a hot spot for Dorado and Sailfish for months just barely had a pulse. Things are improving with Dorado off the point in the 30 lb range. Sailfish are little farther out with Striped Marlin about ten miles off the point at a 310 heading. Rooster Fish are around the corner off Anclote reef near Sayulita! Those in the Sayulita area will find a four hour trip off the beach pangas may be worth it. Beach boats for the most part are not equipped well and are lacking in too many ways. But for something that is close in, especially in this area would make the expense well worth Dorado on the dinner table. Great area for now with plenty of arm burning action.

In the upcoming weeks we will see Skip Jacks moving stronger into the bay. Blue and Black Marlin will start showing in about another month or so. Look for Black and Blue Marlin moving into the deep water locations about the second week of June. But by July the Marlin Fishing will be strong. If heading down for a summer vacation or fishing trip keep this in mind. By mid June we will see larger Yellowfin move in and that´s a good thing amigo! YeHa!!

Written by Stan Gabruk

For weeks and weeks I´ve been waiting for things to improve as we have been stuck in a transition period where we wait and hope the wait is not too long. For now it looks cautiously like the season may have turned the corner now as we see our world famous fishing grounds filling with the summer species we have been looking for, it just depends on where they are and what your fishing budget looks like. But the good news is the fishing is good, not great, but it´s getting better. This trend should continue and as far as Dorado moving in, it was July before we had a chance to boat a gold and sapphire beauty last year. So we should consider ourselves lucky and thank our lucky fishing stars for the sight but positive changes.

First, inside the bay is less than spectacular. Still feeling the lingering winter season dull drums the fishing is still small and for kids is great. Jack Crevalls are still in the bay, small Snappers around structure and other small fish for now. There, that´s the worst news for this week when it comes to fishing.

Dorado Moving into the Marietta Islands

Moving into the areas near the bays boundaries, which of course means the Marietta Islands. Once again this week we´re seeing Sailfish just past the islands, Dorado in the 20 lb range, small for sure. They will be larger soon, just throw the babies and females back. Rooster Fish are running 40lbs and the Pargo or Red Snappers are running between 30 and 40lbs as well. Sailfish are still just a little off the islands and are taking live bait. Well worth the time and fuel dollar. With the slow down in seasonal tourism until June, you have a chance at deserted fishing grounds with fish looking for you to throw something enticing in their direction amigo.

The area around Punta Mita as predicted has exploded with Dorado as well. Also known as Mahi Mahi they are running a little over 25 lbs, still on the small side but we´re happy to throw the babies back. Sailfish are just a little farther out and at about ten miles off the point you´ll find Striped Marlin in the 200 to 275 lb range. No secrets here, live bait, run a lure or two. Find a bait boil and throw everything! Everyone heading this area is hitting something for the dinner table so don´t sweat it, just get out there.

Nathan Howard at Corbeteña, one happy camper here!

Corbeteña is still waiting for Yellowfin tuna, but Stripers and Sails are here as well. One good thing is the Dorado that are here are larger. They are running in the 40 lb range and are in and out mostly. Cubera Snappers in t he structure and there are still schools of Jack Crevalls in the cooler currents.

El Banco, our other deep water location has been on the quiet side, could be a cookie cutter report for Corbeteña. Rainbow Runners, Cubera Snappers and others are there as well. Yellowfin Tuna, there were a few strikes anywhere from five to ten miles off the high spots you may, with some luck you´ll find 60 to 120 lb Yellowfin. Still very, very early for Yellowfin Tuna.

Now if you absolutely, positively have to have a Yellowfin Tuna in winter then the Tres Maria islands are still probably your best bet, but be ready to pay the price. Distance, time and fuel are all factors to consider when pulling that wallet out. Most days for now the closer to the islands the better your chances are, but keep your safe distance, we wouldn´t want anyone to have their boat confiscated for being an idiot!

Bait fish are still moving into the area which is right on time. Fish counts are also picking up on the early side, which we all have no problems with. Water temperatures are inching upwards in the mid to upper 70´s. Water conditions have improved to clear and Blue at the deep water locations. Everything is how it should be compared to the calendar and seasonal expectations. For now we´re very optimistic for the upcoming season.

Since it is never too early to think about a vacation, the Pez Vela or Sailfish Tournament, the biggest tournament in Puerto Vallarta is happening the first week of November this year. While I already have some boats spoken for this year’s tournament, I still have Magnifico our world class tournament ready Bertram ready to go. We are going to stay lower than usual on our boat prices because part of the fun is just being in the game! So get your pennies and nickels rolled and we´ll see you out there come November. Mention you read this in a report and I´ll do something super special for the participants this year.

Just a reminder, here in Mexico when people come up to you and offer goods and services, beware. You are better off going to a place where you can go back and get satisfaction if something goes not according to plan! Don´t be fooled by a price that is so low, it can´t be real, just to find some cockroach took advantage of you looking for a cheap boat at all cost, I saw this happen yesterday to a guy who should have learned the first time. Cheap gets expensive when you get nothing in return. Be smart and don´t do anything you would not do at home, start there!

Remember,Master Baiter´s has moved to a larger location and we are not on the boardwalk in Marina Vallarta any more… We are now located in front of Dock D about a block or so to the right of the Light house facing the water in Marina Vallarta…. Come in and get a free City or Jungle Tour for just walking in the shop and mentioning you read it here… better yet, print it out!

That´s about it for now from PV… Until next time, don´t forget to kiss your fish!

Master Baiter´s Sportfishing & Tackle is located in Marina Vallarta on the Boardwalk in front of Dock D. Facing the water turn to your right and we´re down four doors or so from Las Palomas the Restaurant. Come by and say hello! Remember, at Master Baiter´s Sportfishing and Tackle, We Won´t Jerk You Around! If you have any questions on any subject regarding fishing or Puerto Vallarta, feel free to ask at my email: CatchFish@MasterBaiters.com.mx Web page: www.MasterBaiters.com.mx

www.masterbaiters.com.mx

Puerto Vallarta´s World Famous Fishing Grounds Explode with Dorado, Sailfish and Striped Marlin…. 427.9 lb Yellowfin Tuna at Socorro

Written by Stan Gabruk

For the last few weeks pounding out a cookie cutter report has been less than exciting for me. Every year just after the Easter Holiday the tourism here in Puerto Vallarta takes a dive. The waters in the area are in a transition mode where we see the cold water fish move out as we wait for the warm water species to trickle into the area. This is has been the situation, but it looks like we may finally see some welcome changes in the water temperatures. Which of course is the first ingredient necessary for things to change. With the sudden arrival of Sailfish off El Banco (The Bank in English), Striped Marlin and Dorado we know that at last for now there is trophy game fish in Puerto Vallarta´s world famous fishing grounds. Finally something to write about!

It was funny, a few of my Captains and First Mates came in the shop yesterday to inform me that we now have Sailfish, Dorado and Striped Marlin moving into the area. Now these guys were talking about El Banco and Corbeteña. The two world famous deep water fishing grounds we have outside of Puerto Vallarta. This is big news, we normally see Sailfish move in through the month of March. This year they were here, but they left as the water suddenly chilled to frigid which of course forced them out of the area as fast as they moved in. So they have been waiting like everyone else for some positive signs and this would be one. I heard of a few Yellowfin Tuna coming in at 140 lbs about fifteen miles off the high spots north, Stay tuned….

Sailfish off the Marietta Islands on Marlin our38 ft Luhrs Express

El Banco and Corbeteña the two deep water locations that put Puerto Vallarta (PV) on the fishing map have both come to life, or rather I should say there is a heartbeat again on what was a dead patient. Sailfish have moved in to these two separate fishing grounds in the 70 to 85 lb range, nice sized actually. Dorado are not huge, but we´ll be happy with the 25 pounders any day.

Striped Marlin which really should have been long gone according to the calendar are now just moving in. This is a sign of warmer water, none too soon. Striped Marlin in the 250 lb range are not huge at all, but for release they´re a fun time. Google Eyes for live bait are working best, but run a plug or two anyway.

The Marietta islands are still the place to be for action and are seeing many nice sized Sailfish as well. So if you´re targeting Sails you can find them in 8 hr days with less of an impact on your fuel dollar. Rooster fish are now taking baits again and are running 35 to 45 lbs. Chilango Snappers are also running in the 30 lb range as well. With boils of bait on the surface, just look for the birds. I´m looking for Dorado to move into the Marietta islands shortly as well. So the fishing for now is pretty good amigos. If you´re in town, give it a shot, you may just come in with Dorado for Dinner!. You´ll still find Bonito, Jack Crevalls, small Bass and the list goes on.

Rooster Fish off the Marietta Islands

Punta Mita at the northern point of the bay has been quiet as late. This will be shorted lived as it will soon be Dorado city as it becomes in May. Sailfish are always off the points as the water warms up this will continue. They may be there now, you never know. This area would be your best bet for Dorado inside a ten hour day trip. Rooster fish are still around the corner at Sayulita as usual. For now the Marietta Islands are better for reliable action.

In case you did not hear and were in a cave the last few days, our World Famous Fishing grounds has more spectacular news from Socorro Island(s) where recently a 427.9 lb Yellowfin Tuna was boated on the boat Journeyman (long range boat) . Robert Pedigru landed what could have been a world record, but the pole was handed off and the reel was spooled with 130 lb Spectra braid so it´s sad to say this fish doesn´t qualify for an IGFA certification as a record.

With the Tres Maria Islands being so far away and expensive this option for most people is not reasonable. There have been some more reports of Yellowfin out this way, but only around 80 to120 lbs. If you have to have a Tuna, this is the place to find that finned fantasy. But Remember the Tres Maria Islands is a protected area (http://masterbaiters.com.mx/2012/03/tres-maria-islands-monster-yellowfin-tuna-and-the-unspoken-risk/) with a twelve mile restriction is also a prison island so keep your distance.

Everyone has heard the news when it comes to Mexico. Puerto Vallarta is unaffected by recent current events. In the last week we have had President Barak Obama and Mexican President Calderon were both in Puerto Vallarta for the international Conference of Latin-America last week. So put your fears aside and look at the opportunity in front of the fisherman looking for world record sized finned fantasies. Tourism numbers are down as you would expect, everyone in PV knows low season will be very low this year. What does this mean to the consumer / summer traveler interested in fishing. First it means perfect conditions in rare uncrowded fishing grounds with world class fishing. Five years ago you would have twenty boats around Corbeteña or boats fighting over the high spots at El Banco. The second reason is the monster savings you can get on hotel rooms with names like the Weston, Marriott, Fiesta Americana and many others. Third: You´ll catch fish for sure in Puerto Vallarta if you´re willing to take the time and get out there. Everyone always talks about how it used to be, how there were no boats at Corbeteña or how the Yellowfin were the size of Volkswagens. Well those days are back amigo. So take advantage of the incredible prices and safe atmosphere where the memories you make today will be the memories of ¨the Good Ol Days¨…

That´s about it for now from PV… Until next time, don´t forget to kiss your fish!

Welcome to spring fishing! What does that mean, well you never know until you make it out to the fishing grounds. Days like these can be frustrating to those hoping to enjoy the day on the water with arm burning action. For now if you are one of those ¨guys¨ looking for Rooster fish at the Marietta Islands you´ll be rolling the dice amigo. The blankets of Squid have filtered out or have been eaten by every species in the bay. Some days you come in with fish, other days you come in with your hair in your hands pulling it out in frustration. For those of us who live here in Puerto Vallarta we know we´ll have days like this, but we really don´t believe it until we´ve had a few days like this. For those who are visiting, fishing is fishing and of course that means it is less than an exact sport were we try to tilt the scales in our fishing favor. Maybe someday we´ll be able to read the small mind of a fish, until then we´ll all be in the same boat with the same challenges when it comes to fishing. Such is the brother hood of fisherman and fisher-women.

Jack Cravells at Corbeteña

As stated last week the water is still this clear green color that the fish don`t really like, but tolerate and will take baits if they don´t have any natural bait in the water. This is where the challenge comes in, presenting a bait or lure that will get them to turn their head and maybe, just maybe strike. Another thing that does not help our fishing cause is the mere fact that tourism is down after Easter as is normal, so checking the docks in the afternoon is a fun thing to do, but your chances of seeing boats laden with full fish boxes is unlikely for now. As you may remember reading in my reports, things can change in a heartbeat and usually do. So don´t get discouraged, get prepared!

For now, forget about fishing in the bay. You will still find Bonito and Jack Cravalls in short supply, but they are out in the bay for now. Water temperatures took a dip, not normal for this time of the year, so the Cravalls returned and for the most part will take bait if you come across them. For now keep your ears on and wait for signs of improvement which should be soon as we inch towards May. Here is a little known secret, the river mouth at Nuevo Vallarta is a hot spot to find Snook or Raballo, but you need to head up the river a bit into where the fresh and salt water mix. Flip a Rapalla, silver spinner jig or popper and you may wind up with a 35 pound beauty! But keep this to yourself, it´s our secret.

The Marietta Islands are still full of Rooster Fish and Snappers of good size between 25 and 40 lbs. Bonito, Jack Cravalls, Amber Jacks and more are still there in fair numbers. Sailfish have been sighted off the islands a mile or so off so maybe we´ll see them increase in numbers as we see the summer currents become more prominent.

The point of Punta Mita still has some Dorado, but they have been thinning in numbers as well. Rooster fish are still around the reefs north of the point at Anclote as well where the water seems to be cleaner than around the point. Now if you head north past Guyavitos you will find large Dorado and they seem to have no problem taking bait, but with so few numbers of people fishing it´s hard to get a feel for what is happening here. The good news is you will find Sailfish in fair numbers here as well. But you are looking at a ten hour day which would be a pure play as the brokers say. But isn´t that the name of the game? If you don´t take a chance, you never get a chance amigos.

Heading out past the Marietta Islands you´ll find that Corbeteña has been taken over by Jack Cravalls. This is the biggest sign the water temperatures have dropped. Now Cravalls will hang in warmer water if there is bait which seems to not be a problem for the moment. You may get lucky and find Striped Marlin, Sailfish or even Cubera Snappers for those looking to take a chance. For now I would suggest holding off until there is some encouraging news.

El Banco is fairing no better this past week as well. Now if you are ten miles or so north of the high spots you start to see smaller Yellowfin ´Tuna, nothing over sixty pounds for now, but again this will change when you least expect it. I guess if the fishing is going to transition like it seems to have been doing for some time now, the time for this would be now as we switch from spring to summer fishing.

For those who just have to take a chance on boating a winter Yellowfin Tuna, the Tres Maria Islands have seen the abundance and size of these ¨locals¨ thinning a little, but this is not unusual since fish move. With the reputation the Tres Maria Islands have developed I am sure we will get some positive and motivating news shortly. Still I would wait for some positive signs or news.

To put it all in a nut shell, the fishing is not at it´s best, but it´s still not bad. For guys like me, I am spoiled and I know it. For the guy who lives in PV, wait for things to get better. For the visiting Angler, take a shot. The worst thing that will happen to you is you meet some nice guys, have a great day on the water doing what you love to do. For the guy whos vacation will be in ruins if no fish are caught on the one day he has planed on then maybe you should look at your options. So it all depends on you amigo. No guts, no glory or trophy sized game fish!

60 lb Yellowfin Tuna at the Tres Maria Islands

I figure we are about two weeks from currents changing and bringing in the warm water and pelagic gamefish we all are waiting for now! So feel free to contact me with your questions via email or phone and get the latest and greatest ….

Come this time of the as we spring forward into fishing season we hopefully begin to see Sailfish and with any luck at all by mid April we´ll have Dorado (aka Mahi Mahi). For the last couple of years Dorado took their time finding Puerto Vallarta (PV) and did not show up until mid July so we´re just happy to have these gold and Sapphire Colored Blue Plate Specials swimming in our World Famous Fishing Grounds. The other good news on the agenda is how Sailfish have shown up again in the Golden Triangle. This is the area between El Morro, Corbeteña and El Banco. Along with the Sailfish there have been some Striped Marlin released as well. It may be a little early in the season to talk of any frenzies, but we are happy that Dorado is showing early. High Season for fishing begins now and there is no turning back until next January.

Snappers at the Marietta islands

For the last couple of weeks we have had to deal with dirty green water which of course fish are not fond of and of course means they won´t take a bait. One reason is they may not see it, the other is this water leaves a bad taste in their mouth for sure. That was last week, today we still have some green water, but it´s¨ the clean green¨ as my crew call it. The fish seem to be ok with. By that I mean fish will see and take baits in this emerald water. So it looks like the currents have pushed out the bad stuff and we can focus on the fish and not the conditions although they are always a factor. We may see more dirty water in the season as is normal, but for now it ¨feels´ like we´re going to move into summer earlier than I expected last week. Update: No wonder these fish are not taking baits, there are just clouds of these one inch Squids and they´re pigging out like, well…pigs! Run brown and red squid biats, daisy chains would be your best bet with stainless sharp hooks, you´ll need to rely on these smaller hooks so no cheap crap if you please…

If you have been fishing in the bay and wondering what the deal is, well the bay has been less than exciting. You´ll only find very small fish and not many of those. You may have some luck off Yelapa or Cabo Corrientes but for the most part anything under eight hour trips is lacking. This should change in the coming weeks as water temperatures are raising with the warm days we´ve been having. Everything will slowly change from this point forward. Just remember during summer the bigger species are farther out so most of the attention is focused outside the bay. We will see smaller Dorado and a host of other fish in the bay but this will take a little longer than what shows up farther out.

Mony and her Red Snapper

For now the Marietta Islands seem to still be the place for shorter day trips, at 28miles out it´s not exactly a short trip. Those with the inclination and fuel dollars will find there are still Rooster Fish, Jack Cravalls, Snapper, Sierra Mackerals, Blue/Green Runners and other winter fish here. The numbers of fish are diminishing but they are still there to be had amigos so hit it now if you can.

The area just a few miles south of the Marietta Islands has seen Sailfish swimming on the surface, jumping and lounging in the sun. They do this and you may toss baits at them for which many times they will ignore. Right now one out of three may take bait, so it will be work for sure, but is it really work? Striped Marlin are also hanging out in the area so if you´re heading to Corbeteña you may want to troll to the rock from El Morro. For now the bite is happening with the Sailfish around 1:00 PM. So plan your day accordingly like I plan our fishing trips.

The area around Corbeteña is alive with action once more. For the most part these are Dorado in the 30 lb range and the numbers have been decent. So go for it, they taste great and are taking lures and Google eyes in the ¨clean green¨. We should see Sailfish and Striped Marlin in this area as well so be ready for some serious strikes.

El Banco is still void of any real action. You may find some Dorado there as is likely, but the reports coming in from this are disappointing at best. For now your fuel dollar is better spent elsewhere. I expect El Banco to be better than it has been the last three crazy years and with just a smidge of luck the domination current north will sweep down and put El Banco in the middle of it as we look for. This will mean closer in Yellowfin Tuna. Why hit the Tres Maria Islands if you can find the same thing closer to home base?

Rooster Grande or Pez Guyo (Gallo)

Punta Mita Point and the Sayulita reef of Anclote have seen Rooster fish in the 25 to 40lb range the ultimate few days so we will keep an eye on this area. Not really reliable enough yet to suggest hitting this area, but that can change in a few minutes so keep your ears on. The water temperatures are still on the cold side of 74 degrees, but it looks to be warm enough now for summer species to start moving in. This is good news amigo so be happy.

The Tres Maria Islands this past week was a mixed bag. The southern island Juanita was jammed full of 60 to80lb Yellowfin Tuna for the most part. But there were reports from the same day of the main prison island being empty of Yellowfin. One thing for sure, fish move so you never know where they will be when bait moves in. As a reminder this is a prison island and biosphere reserve so respect the twelve mile limit off the islands and you´ll have no problems being there!

Bait is available, but not abundant at the fishing grounds so make bait when you can amigos. You can still purchase bait from the boats by the fuel dock in the morning. Bonito and Google eyes for now are working as well as anything else so have your bag of tricks handy and some bait, anything can happen from this point forward.

That´s about it for now from PV… Until next time, don´t forget to kiss your fish!

www.masterbaiters.com.mx

Tres Maria Islands, Monster Yellowfin Tuna and The Unspoken Risk

Written By Stan Gabruk

Sorry I missed you all last week, I was in the Fred Hall Fishing Show and was disconnected from my computer. I would rather be lost without my car, my god what have I turned into? But the show was a success, made lots of new contacts, touched bases with old contacts, laughed a lot. We all discussed safety concerns in Mexico, I gave them my thoughts on that, then we discussed the Monster Yellowfin ¨They´ve¨ been yanking out of the Tres Maria Islands. They didn`t know how correctly they used the word ¨yanking¨! Stand by, you´re going to get some information that if you are coming to go fishing at the Tres Maria Islands outside of Puerto Vallarta you need to know, I will keep it as brief as I can. But it can quite possibly save you some serious distress……

About two years ago there was a new bulletin board that was started by a couple of Skate Board guys that found a popular following in the void of ¨Credible¨ Puerto Vallarta information as it relates to the Sportfishing Game. That was their comments, Master Baiter´s has been publishing articles for years…. But, It quickly turned into what many considered the best source of information there was about Puerto Vallarta or P.V. as the locals call it. This free bulletin board crew of Marina Vallarta Locals, the children of the original PV Crew that started Club De Pesca more than fifty years ago! These kids all went online and chatted the site up, basically stacking the deck on their four hand game. It brought some attention to Puerto Vallarta and acted as a marketing tool filling the void to a new generation of internet user. This bulletin board was working on some level so we all wished the best for them all. It Grew, it got famous and they got careless with your safety for a fist full of Gringo Greenbacks.

Conservation is an interesting thing, that is until it starts taking money out of your pocket. Then it turns into something you or rather ¨they¨ either ignore or just pretend isn´t worth any bother / attention since nobody’s in Mexico to enforces this anyway. So why worry, make money, nobody knows they are there. Well that was for the most part true until the news stories made national news of Yellowfin Tuna being boated off the *Tres Maria Islands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islas_Mar%C3%ADas) well over two hundred pounds. Now these sorts of comments will get the hair on the back of your neck standing up. You may have to go a ways, but for Southern California types, two to three day trips are common place and these guys are lining up for Monster Yellowfin Tuna! YeHa, Happy Day, ¨The Cows are Back¨ went the raves and they`re still ranting. News of a four hundred and thirty pound Yellowfin Tuna that was boated off the Tres Maria Islands was heard far and wide. The following days there seemed to be a mad rush to these hot fishing grounds with Tuna in excess of one hundred and fifty pounds on a daily basis. Sportfishing Publications, Magazines, Freshly Famous Web Sites that own and sponsor these boats, everyone is jumping on the news and promoting a very small handful of companies who specialize in taking six to eight anglers a day out fishing to these Islands. There is only one problem with this happy fishing fantasy… The fantasy of hitting monster Yellowfin Tuna in ¨their¨ newly discovered fishing grounds. A new secret fishing spot as they beat their chest like victorious Gorillas and once again declared themselves the King of Fishing in Vallarta. But there is one thing that seems to be going unheard! The Tres Maria Islands (Islas Marias) is a Biosphere Reserve!

Another Map of Islas Marias Biosphere / Prison Islands

You may ask yourself ¨What is a Biosphere Reserve¨? Here´s the answer:

Biosphere reserves are areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems promoting solutions to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use. They are internationally recognized, nominated by national governments and remain under sovereign jurisdiction of the states where they are located. Biosphere reserves serve in some ways as ‘living laboratories’ for testing out and demonstrating integrated management of land, water and biodiversity. Collectively, biosphere reserves form a world network: the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR). Within this network, exchanges of information, experience and personnel are facilitated. There are over 500 biosphere reserves in over 100 countries. Hit the link for more exacting information **(http://www.unesco.org/mab/doc/faq/brs.pdf)

The other thing to remember is these are also a prison on these islands, they´re the Alcatraz of Mexico with some really bad guys who seem to find their way off the islands on occasion. They sometimes leave by water, which of course means those with boats come pick up these floating criminals, which of course could be you if you are looking at this situation through the navy´s eyes! You can find more information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islas_Mar%C3%ADas_Federal_Prison

Ok, now you know why this area is so sensitive, both to the government relative to the prison. And relative to the ecosystem this Biosphere is. This is an international Conservation area where we are not allowed to fish. Hell we shouldn´t even want to fish in these areas. In the states the fine for a corporation is over a million dollars! These boats are risking everything for a fist full of Gringo Greenbacks. Here in Mexico is seems a sandwich, few sodas and some fish is all it takes to turn the local NAVY guys into their best buddies! Well that was until the Commandant of the Navy here in PV got wind of this from a guy speaking to him of the fishing as they watched their kids playing soccer here in town. That´s right folks, the commandant heard this from some guy at his kids soccer game. The word is out and now you can expect to see boats confiscated and worse. Puerto Vallarta is a small town and you never know who you are talking to.

For those of you wondering how this affects you and your safety, there is a lot you don´t know. The first thing, without mentioning names, there have been boats that have been stopped, warned, taken in, had their pictures taken, finger printed then released with a strong warning not to return. So what do they do, they go back, do it again, and again, and again… you get the idea. There was one boat where the Captain was grabbed with his boat, they shaved his head, put him in with the general population and was then released five days later. I can only imagine how worried his wife was. He was let go so he could tell everyone to keep their distance, it worked in the opposite, this captain chose to keep his mouth shut and keep doing the same thing with his hand full of Gringo Greenbacks.

There was word the Mexican National commercial fishermen were being grabbed, their fish and equipment taken as they too were kept twenty four hours on the prison island. Now to me I think this is enough warning, but there are still those who are putting trusting and unsuspecting clients into harms way. This is serious stuff to be sure. So you need to know the risk you are taking as you trust this company, boat, web site pushing these boats and Captains but are not hearing. Why, you know why. Most of these guys are Americans, running American Boats in Mexican Waters. Handing out Sandwiches and Sodas will not be working much longer. The boats will start to be seized, kept and moved to Manzanillo where they handle things like this and most likely fined big time! But what does this mean to the Client who thinks he`s on a safe operation, well he is stuck as well. Remember the housing on the Tres Maria Islands are prison housing, not the Hilton! The crew on the island stays for extended periods of time, I head three months but that was word of mouth stuff. But one thing for sure, how ever long it is, it will feel like an eternity for you and those who have no clue where you are or what happened to you. There are no phone call laws in Mexico, especially on an island that is eighty miles out from Puerto Vallarta! One thing is for sure if anything happens you will hear about this all over the international news about how civilian tourist were grabbed by the Navy.

What makes me upset is the mere fact this is an international Biosphere Reserve and the boat owners and captains know it. They don´t tell the clients what they are doing or it would mean money out of their pocket. They Famous web site that is owner of one boat in particular could not declare how these guys are Killing it at the Tres Maria Islands as they sucker you into taking the unknown risk as you hand over your Gringo Greenbacks! With all the news these islands are getting it won´t be long before they keep a boat, make the crew and clients go through hell not to mention the families of those on these boats. You will be treated like a criminal and possibly fined. Forget how long you will be on the island, forget the money you paid for this to happen to you, but remember the guys who told you it was safe to fish the Tres Maria Islands…..

This is a warning, there will be a boat taken and it will be on the international news as all hell breaks out in the fishing world. This sort of thing could kill fishing in Mexico, all of Mexico. These companies are not only risking their boats AND the clients safety, but they´re also threatening the entire fishing industry relative to Sportfishing in Mexico. We can´t afford to turn a deaf ear or blind eye any longer.

There are those out there that will not like me stepping on their Gringo Bucks but this is bigger than one or two companies suckering gringos, it’s about not fishing out the only Yellowfin Tuna Breeding Grounds we have on west coast of Mexico. It´s about saving these fish and locations from those who want to abuse Mexico’s Reserves with no concern for the ecosystem.

Be safe, be informed, and Check out the links below to learn more for yourself. Respect the twelve mile limit, there are plenty of fish out there. You can´t rely on those taking your money to do the right thing for even themselves, how do you expect them to give a darn about you? You´ve been warned buy a guy and company who will not go inside the twelve mile limit.

I did not mention any names or companies, but if you are looking into Fishing The Tres Maria Islands you know who I am talking about, there is more than one amigos looking to put you at risk….

One more time, just when you think you know what the deal is, you don´t. To me it looked like we were going to have a warm water winter this year as we all enjoyed some of the warmer water species that have been hanging around. But the green water returned to the bay and if you are looking at anything under eight hours your chances of boating anything larger than Nimo is dismal at best amigo. Straight up the bay is dead, dead, dead. But not so elsewhere in our world famous fishing grounds.

Football Yellowfin Tuna on the Gaff

Now that warm current has seemed to disappear, water temperatures have plummeted to 67 to 69 degrees, downright chilly for this area. On top of that the water in the outer areas is a ¨clear green¨ which means for the most part the fish can handle it and many times there is just a thin film of this on the surface water. Now there is the dark green as well so stay out of the green stuff!

All the action this week has centered around two places in general. The channel from the Point at Punta Mita to the Marietta Islands you will find Snappers and Pompano and maybe even some spinner Dolphin, which is a welcome sight for sure. Around the Sayulita area you have a shot at some decent sized Rooster fish around 35 lbs.

The triangular area between El Banco, the Marietta Islands and El Banco, the Golden Triangleas I call it is the area that produces the most fish. Maybe not always the biggest fish, but plenty of game fish to be sure. Between El Banco and Corbeteña there have been Yellowfin Football Tuna in the 35 to 50 lb range and this is pretty much the game between these two locations. Now if you are at El Banco there are Whachalango Snappers that are dark in color and white meat. They`re running 40 to 50 lbs and are hitting live bait of Google eyes or Chorras. Between the point and El Banco there have been some, not many, Striped Marlin Hook-ups which is an added plus if in the area.

Yellowfin Football Ready to Filet

Corbeteña is also seeing Red Snappers to 40lbs, Jumping Yellowfin (Yfin) Tuna (35 to 50 lbs) on the surface and are hitting Google eyes, cedar plugs and lures of purple and green. Whachalangos (Snapper Species) are here as well in the same 40 lb range Arctic Bonito with teeth have a light colored meat and are great tasting, look for the black striping on the upper quarter of the body and you´ll know these are not your California Bonito that are deep red meat fish.

The Marietta Islands remain the place to be if you´re looking for winter gamefish action. Rooster Fish are back in the 30 to 45 lb range, Jack Cravalls, Pompano to 30 lbs, Skippies, Bonito, and even some Snappers, anything is possible and they´re taking baits. Normally this is an eight hour trip so plan for that.

There is still a lot of noise about the Tres Maria Islands and something you all should know about is that this area is more than a game preserve, it is an official Biosphere which makes a game reserve seem like nothing when you look at the regulations. Keep the safe distance of twelve miles off the islands and you will be fine.

I am heading to the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach the week of March 7th to the 12th. We´ll be selling T-shirts and some hats, answering questions and promoting Master Baiter´s, if you´re in the Long Beach Convention area, come by and say hello!

Important Notice: After six years Master Baiter´s has changed its location. We are still in Marina Vallarta, only now we´re located in front of Dock D. Our phone number is the same if I can get the phone company to hook it up. Still, we are at the same phone number of (011 52 1) 322 779 7571, this is my cell if you are roaming. My shop number is still (011 52 322) 209 1128 if you are local then my cell is (044) 322 779 75 71 or shop is at (322) 209 1128. The web page and email address is still the same and hopefully the phone company will find the shop so I can get my act together on the net once again after a week…

When in Puerto Vallarta don´t forget to visit the other Malicon in Marina Vallarta where there is a twenty restaurant row and 150 shops to explore and discover. If you don´t know how to find Marina Vallarta just tell the Taxi Driver go to El Faro in Marina Vallarta and you found Marina Vallarta!

Until next time, don´t forget to kiss your fish!
