Bull Dorado off the Marietta Islands, Striped Marlin at El Banco!

Bull Dorado off the Marietta Islands, Striped Marlin at El Banco!

Written by: Stan Gabruk

Welcome to another amazing week of fishing here in Puerto Vallarta. This year we´ve been blessed by the fishing gods with warm water in the middle of winter. With these warm water temperatures running around 78 degrees we have some serious fishing happening here and now. Plenty of bait in the water insures these summer species like Bull Dorado, Striped Marlin and Sailfish won´t be leaving anytime soon. As we move into spring, it looks like this years fishing season may be something to remember.01 07 2009 Bill and Wendy Smith, Magnifico wTEXT

The best action this week was just off the Marietta Islands with big Bull Dorado running over 50 lbs. Yep, that´s what I said. Sailfish in the 70 lb range are hanging, Red Snappers to 35 lbs just south of the Islands, Bonito, Jack Crevalls, Rooster Fish (35 – 50 lbs), the place is awash in action. This isn´t rocket science, show up, catch fish, and be happy. This is a rare treat, it´s the right place and now is the right time, so get off your duff and get it in gear amigos! Normally it´s March when we begin to start to see some Sailfish coming in. But they never left this year so we´re primed for what could be an exciting Sailfish Season!

El Banco is a little surprising as well this week. Striped Marlin are all over the area and are picking up in numbers. Again it looks like late summer fishing in March. There are herds of Spinner Dolphin around the high spots, which of course means there are football sized Yellowfin Tuna in the 35 lb range running with them. Cubera Snappers for the jiggers, Amber Jacks, and the possibility of some larger Yellowfin Tuna, but that is rolling the dice. Mid Sized lures of Pink, Green and Blue are working best. Also trolled dead bait seems to be a preference, but bring live bait just in case.

The Tres Maria Islands this week saw several boats come in with Yellowfin Tuna over 200 lbs and this will not change. Just remember it´s close to 100 miles out, so consider overnight trips to get more bang for your fishing bucks.03 23 08 Week of 001 wTEXT

Corbeteña was a little slow this week. The bottom fishing for Cubera Snappers, Striped Marlin, and some Yellowfin Tuna doesn´t make this area worth the fuel dollars, for this moment anyway. Things can change in a heartbeat so make sure you get the latest and greatest before heading out.  Not much to say about Corbeteña.

Punta Mita is also seeing many Sailfish, Striped Marlin about 15 miles off the point and Rooster fish at the Anclote reef in Sayulita. For the moment the Marietta Islands would be a better choice.

Inside the bay there are just fields of smaller Jack Crevalls under five pounds, but you can catch 30 to 40 in a four hour day. So you have affordable action and you´re on the water amigo, it could be a lot worse!

Right now we´re seeing warmer than usual water temperatures, which is why the Sailfish and Dorado Bulls are heavy around the Marietta Islands. I have no reason to believe this will change as we move into spring in a short while. The bite is after mid day and runs to about 5 O´clock in the afternoon. So getting out there too early is not to your advantage. We´ve seen some red tide this week as well, but it´s streaky and that was at the mouth of the bay. So be prepared to change your game plan if the water turns red.08 10 2008 Discovery, Thomas Harris, 10hrs, Corb. Sail, Marlin 009 wTEXT
