Big Snappers, Larger Rooster Fish hitting Large Rapallas!

Big Snappers, Larger Rooster Fish hitting Large Rapallas!

My desk top Weather Channel icon tells me today that it is 81degrees, Humidity over 70%, Smooth seas, and cool breezes in the evening. Puerto Vallarta (PV) is perfect weather for us Human types right now, but the calendar tells us that we are now moving into tourisms slow season. Many of the hotels will scale back employees, close down others for the summer and go into a holding pattern.  Gone or going are the family types who want to just go out in the bay for a short day, see some whales and catch Moby Dick! The Month of May is one of the worst for businesses in PV. Even the Mexican Nationals desert this jewel of a city. So much for people, now comes High Season for Fishing! As winter lingers on this has to be the longest run of Rooster Fish I have ever seen! For weeks now we have been seeing these Mohawk headed demons at the Marietta Islands and off Sayulita.

Little has changed as late and if you were targeting Rooster fish, you got your wish and fuel money’s worth for sure! The same goes for Pargo or Snappers as well. Plenty of bait, extremely smooth seas, perfect weather, clear green water or blue water farther out. The Roosters at the Marietta Islands and Sayulita are anywhere from 40lbs to 70lbs it just depends on your luck. There are still Grouper, Sierra Mackerals and a few Bonito at the Marietta Islands as well.

Snappers have also taken over the playground near both El Morro and the Marietta Islands. From mid-sized to larger anything is possible. The smallest keeper is about 20 lbs up to 45lbs on the Snappers, but larger sizes on the Pargo.

Dorado Sightings ten miles outside of Corbeteña is the first Dorado seen in this area. This is a good sign, but my crystal ball has a crack in it and the duct tape keeps getting in the way. The best I can make out is the water temperatures are warming up daily, ever so slightly. There have been flying fish at El Banco, but they come in quickly and leave quickly. As a favorite food of Marlin and Sailfish you would expect to see some sort of Billfish show up soon. Namely Sailfish… My picture is fading, but Corbeteña is showing some signs of life in the Cubera Snapper department if you are trolling near some structure or bottom fishing.  You can get snappers at the Marietta Islands, so wait for the day something is there to catch… I know it´s like watching a clock. Sailfish are more than a month late, let’s hope this is not an indication of a late summer fishing season. Well the picture has faded….stay tuned!

With very few people in Marina Vallarta, there are very few fishing boats going out so it is difficult to know what exactly is happening out there. But there have been several short day trips that are great for kids right now. Smaller fish like Jack Crevalls to 30lbs, Snappers, Needle fish and smaller grouper are around the rocks and structure. For winter fishing there are always fish to be had in the bay, but it won’t be Moby Dick no matter what that timeshare OPC’s told you….

Now you can go out there and run live bait which is always a safe way to go. But the inside story on getting a hit is to use Rapallas of larger size, trolled forty to sixty feet. Using a down rigger is not a bad idea. Also if you are in the area where you may think there are flying fish, troll poppers on the surface at a higher speed of six to eight miles an hour skipping the popper on the surface. Silver with pink is working well for colors right now. Yellow and pink are both good colors to run right now. Remember this is our inside secret to keep it to yourself.

All and all we are still watching the clock for the Sailfish to arrive. We won’t see any Marlin until the second to third week of June… that is if they are on time this year. Yellowfin Tuna will start moving into the area surrounding Corbeteña and El Banco come early to late July if all goes according to what is normal and what my fractured crystal ball tells me! Remember early reservations on boats will guarantee you get the quality boat and service from higher end captains and boats. But don’t reserve blindly, make sure you know what the conditions are before you book. I would say to wait until you hear encouraging news on the fishing front before you book fishing trips and hotels. I suggest The Marriott Casa Magma or the Westin Hotels in Marina Vallarta. Located on top of the Village in Marina Vallarta and the tenth best privately owned marina in the world, you are just steps away from the fishing boats and all you will want or need…

That’s about it for now, until next week, don´t forget to kiss your fish!
